Year 6
Curriculum
Autumn Term
Why do we remember them?
Because we want our children to be critical thinkers, we build on the work children have undertaken in year 5 on peace and conflict, considering whether there are empowering changes that can come from conflict. Studying women in war-time Britain, children see how women gained a bigger step forward towards equality. Children reflect in this enquiry on the impact of money on equality and how equality can be taken away. This enquiry leads into the children thinking in the next term about trade and fair access to the global economy.

How can trade reflect success?
Because we want our children to have a sense of fairness and a deeper understanding of what makes a fair society, children look at the idea of empowerment and how this can be fought for and assisted. The idea of fair trade is explored as children learn about monetary and mineral wealth and how these can help a country to grow. Following on from learning about women in the Second World War, children look at how this was preceded by the suffragette movement and how women empowered each other. Through the lens of RE, children consider the ways in which religion empowers people to dream and fight for what they think is right.

What makes up life’s rich tapestry?
Because we want our children to be open to the diversity of our world, we bring the world to long Eaton. Children are invited to explore the rich culture of South America, Africa and Europe through music, RE, history and art. Children build their knowledge of the Spanish language and make connections to how this helps culture develop. This enquiry ties together knowledge from previous years and, in particular, the previous enquiry.
