Our Approach to Teaching & Learning
In partnership with Flying High, we aim to ensure;
‘Consistently high-quality teaching which ensures that all pupils achieve the best possible outcomes.’
- A mastery approach to teaching informed by leading research
- Staff who have a clear understanding of how children learn
- Staff who understand that learning ‘cannot be left to chance.’
- Staff who understand how to remove barriers to children’s learning
- Teaching that allows children to build on existing knowledge, providing sufficient opportunities for children to know, remember and understand more.
- Children who make connections between prior and current learning, resulting in more fluent recall of knowledge stored in the long-term memory and a greater understanding of concepts and ‘big ideas.’
Our approach to lesson design is based around the research of Sweller's Cognitive Load Theory and Rosenhine's Principles of Instruction. It ensures that children's existing knowledge is reactivated before teaching new knowledge in small 'chunks' of granular knowledge.
We have a fluid approach to lesson design whereby each element of the session is carefully crafted and allowing the teacher to expertly flow between each element. It encompasses elements of modelling and facilitation as well as time for children to work together as well as independently to secure new learning. There are also regular opportunities for reflection throughout the lesson to consolidate the key learning.
